| When I got the invitation to attend Orpheus in Africa I really didn’t know what I was in for. I was aware of the many people talking about the musical, the striking advertisements throughout the city, and the feeling of excitement. Now, I know exactly why people were abuzz. David Kramer’s brilliance is shown again and again, by the playwriting, musical compositions, chosen actors and just how much the story connected to the audience. It was a beautiful piece of work about a 1890s black American Jubilee singing troupe from Hampton University that travelled around the world. It was a powerful play about race, cultural differences, and staying true to one’s own personal beliefs. It was hard to watch at times due to some of the hard issues it tackles, yet the music and acting was so uplifting. It is a must see.
