One of my advisor's is very fond of the 3MT competition started by the University of Queensland, Australia. It is now a global science communication competition that often starts with a local/home university competition and then you make it up the ranks to compete in Australia. 3MT helps graduate students explain their research (or in my case one of my favorite chapters) in under three minutes. It is a test of being concise and compelling, very much like an elevator pitch. For those of you still not convinced, I won a $500 travel award which helped me attend the Botanical Society of America's #Botany2018 Meeting in Minnesota where I presented my work, a breakfast for my department in my honor and of course, a cool video and bragging rights! It was a wonderful opportunity. I have been encouraging every graduate student to give it a go! I want to try for first place in 2019!!

It is always a pleasure meeting like minded people. Two weeks ago I was fortunate to be named a Fulbright Alumni Ambassador, as well as meet other amazing alumni students and professionals. You never know where life might take you, but enjoy the ride. I am passionate about science and promoting more inclusion in minority communities. I am also passionate about traveling and learning more about new cultures (and really learning how similar we all are). Fulbright has allowed for not only the advancement of my professional works, but also the advancement of learning more about African culture and communities. It has been a wonderful and impactful experience. I hope to pass on the torch to the next set of Fulbright fellows. Apply, apply, apply!! You too can be a #Fulbright-er!!
Official announcement and blog post here. I was awarded the opportunity to become a Fulbright Alumni Ambassador and will be traveling to Washington, D.C. this week to fully understand what this means (besides glory and honor). As I start to think over my experiences, these are some of my most found memories. I am missing tons of pictures (especially from Winnie and Paul), but this is what I have before I get on my flight. What a wonderful opportunity I was afforded to do research in the most beautiful country in the world, with the most amazingly diverse landscapes, people, food and culture. Wow! Now I get to travel and encourage other students to join me in this Fulbright journey to research, study, teach, create and foster mutual understandings between the U.S. and other countries. In my search for free Wi-Fi I have found that good coffee is no stranger to South Africa. I would even go as far to say that they have better coffee selections, presentation and overall atmosphere than in the States (yes it is true!). It is something to sit and enjoy a great cup of joe that is not sugared up, watered down or burnt. Coffee is served here as art and the ingredients are often local. Enough of my high praises, here is my list plus extras.
No. 1 Field Office – Mowbray Come for the red latte’s and stay for the kind people and chill atmosphere. No. 2 Origin Coffee Roasting – De Waterkant Some would say ‘hipster’ and I just call it cool vibes. It has a stem punk feel and good cups of joe. No. 3 Hello Sailor – Observatory This cute place is often a meeting spot of many Americans. It has great service and is next to many restaurants if you are feeling up for an adventure. Honorable Mentions: TriBakery – Claremont It is in a mall, but I still like the quite set up. The coffee and breakfast is superb. You must try the french toast croissant, a-ma-zing! Perfect Place – Wellington If you are in wine country and need to start the day off right, try the perfect place! It is a cute ma and pop, knick knack shop with great coffee and food. Tribe Coffee – Woodstock Solid coffee, period. Similar to the Starbucks chains: Vida e Caffé – Many locations Less sugary than Starbucks, which is good. It has your basics and some great tea and lemonade drinks, just in time for summer. My only problem with Vida is that Wi-Fi is limited to 50 MB per day. Mugg & Bean – Many locations Like you Starbucks, but less sugary and no thrills. Standard, good coffee. This was just a lovely day! We whale watched in the morning and wine tasted in the evening. What more could you ask for?!! I want to thank @WinnieSambu for organizing such a perfect trip. #PerfectDay #WhaleCrierofHermanus #Whalebehaviorexperts @CreationWines @SumaridgeWines
It was worth the half day hike to get to the top!! #stunningviews #rockclimbing #hikinginthefog ‘Boomslang’ Tree Canopy Walkway @KirstenboschNBG #stunningview #areyouafraidofheights There are many reasons to go to the garden, but here is one more: Check out this summer's concert series here: http://www.sanbi.org/gardens/kirstenbosch/summer-concerts |
